SOUTHAVONG, B. HProfessor Bounhong Southavong is a pharmacist and pharmacognosist with special expertise in the study of Lao Traditional Medicines, especially medicinal plants. Since 1997, he has been Director of the Traditional Medicine Research Center, Ministry of Health of Laos, Vientiane, Lao P.D.R. He is also President of the Council of Medical Sciences, and has been Vice President of the National Ethic Committee on Medical Sciences Research, and of the Council of Medical Care Professionals of the Ministry of Health of Laos. The Project Leader of an ICBG program since 1998, he has the responsibility of implementing research on the studies of medicinal plants of Laos. One outcome of this ICBG program is the Lao Biodiversity Fund (LBF), established in 2004, for which he serves as Vice President. The mission of LBF is to promote the sustainable utilization of Lao plant resources, the conservation of biodiversity (in particular, medicinal plants), community development, and the protection of Lao Traditional Medicines.
