Intellectual Property Databases

The following list of databases cover most major forms of intellectual property and important for health and agricultural innovation globally and nationally. If you have or know of an additional IP database that you would like posted in this collection please email us at editors@iphandbook.org.

PATENT DATABASES – PUBLICLY ACCESSIBLE

World Intellectual Property Organization: PatentScope

This facility allows you to search 1,319,890 international (PCT or WO) patent applications and to view the latest information and documents available from the International Bureau.

European Patent Office: esp@cenet

Search the EP database for patent applications published by the European Patent Office over the last 24 months. Search the WIPO database for patent applications published by WIPO (WO publications) in the last 24 months. And, search the worldwide database for information about published patent applications from over 80 different countries and regions. esp@cenet® holds data on 60 million patents from 81 countries. A total of 30.5 million of these patents have a title, while 29.5 million have an ECLA class, and 19.5 million an abstract in English.

European Patent Office: Register Plus

The Register Plus is the place to find out whether a European patent application has been granted or not. It records the steps of the European patent granting procedure as the application passes through. Users can even call up images of the correspondence between the EPO and the patent applicant (or the patent attorney).

Search issued U.S. patents (full-text since 1976, full-page images since 1790) and U.S. patent applications (published since 15 March 2001).

Google: Patent Search

Google Patent Search covers the entire collection of patents made available by the USPTO—from patents issued in the 1790s through those issued in the middle of 2006. Using the same technology that powers Google Book Search, Google has converted the entire image database of U.S. patents into a format that’s easy to search. As with Google Web Search, we rank patent results according to their relevance to a given search query. We use a number of signals to evaluate how relevant each patent is to a user's query, and we determine our results algorithmically.

PatentStorm offers patents from the US Patent Office, including full-text patent search. Today, we have all patents from January 1990 forward. PatentStorm is a sister company of Storming Media, a Washington, DC-based company that makes US federal government information more accessible.

The most comprehensive database of global value-added patent documents published. 1.5 million patent documents are added into the database each year from 41 patent-issuing authorities. Team of 350 specialist editors assess, classify and index these documents to provide concise English language abstracts, which are readily searched and easily understood. As of June 2007, the database contains 15.5 million records covering 33.07 million patent documents.

UPOV Plant Variety Database (on CD-ROM)

Data on plant varieties from contributing members of the Union and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) (representing about 300,000 documents) is available in the UPOV-ROM search system. The great majority of these documents relate to plant breeders’ rights or national listings in the members of the Union

TRADEMARK DATABASES

WIPO Madrid Express (Trademark) Structured Search

The Madrid Express database includes all international registrations that are currently in force or have expired within the past six months. It reflects the situation of the International Register of Marks as at 08/10/2007. It also includes data relating to international applications and subsequent designations that have been received by the International Bureau but have not yet been recorded in the international register of marks.

U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS)

TESS contains more than 4 million pending, registered, and dead federal U.S. trademarks.

E.U. Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market, Trade Marks and Designs, CTM-ONLINE (Community Trademark Online)

The Office for Harmonization promotes and manages trade marks and designs within the European Union. It carries out registration procedures for titles to Community industrial property, and it keeps public registers of these titles. CTM-ONLINE provides ready access to information on Community trade mark applications and Community trade marks, updated on a daily basis.

Japanese Trademark Database

The Japanese Industrial Property Digital Library maintains a searchable online database of 1.8 million registered trademarks and over 400,000 trademark applications.
